Dec 4-6 food diary-- I take my daughter to see an inappropriate European film

Dec. 4
Breakfast:  handful of green raisins mixed with handful of pistachios.  1 fried egg.  Glass of guarana soda.  My husband doesn't like it and my daughter doesn't really drink soda, so it's all on me.

Lunch (eaten at 10 am before work): few pieces parmesan cheese; carrot sticks; banana; half a grapefruit with a little sugar; slice of 6-herb toast with butter.  Coffee.

Dinner: Madhur Jaffrey's Hot and Spicy Sichuan-Style Eggplants, with white rice and a supplementary vegetable stirfry of CSA bok choy, CSA cabbage, and carrots.  One fried egg on top.  I made extra vegetables because of my husband's recent decision that he does not like eggplant.  I thought the Szechuan (Sichuan, whatever) eggplant was delicious, if a bit mushy.  I put a few bites on his plate and he ate them and declared them "okay" in an unenthusiastic voice.

Snacks: cup of sake while preparing dinner.  I warmed it up this time, and it really was a lot better!  Glass of guarana soda after dinner.  The usual coffee, I'm sure, though I failed to record this.

Breakfast, before work at 8 am: Leftover Szechuan eggplant.  Leftover stirfried vegetables with rice.  Small cup of mixed pistachios and green raisins.

Lunch: Grilled ham and cheddar with tomato on a baguette, taken home from the restaurant.  A customer had ordered this yesterday and it looked amazing.  It was good.  The new baguette rolls are definitely a nice option.

Dinner: 3 slices of Domino's pizza with sausage, onion, mushroom, and tomato, ordered in while my husband and I watched stuff on TV.  We had a 50% off coupon.  Glass of guarana soda.

Snacks: (at work) several spoonfuls of soy peanut butter milkshake, left over from making it for a customer.  Spoonful or two of strawberry milkshake.  A few swallows of fresh juice (I forget what kind).  4 cups of coffee with half and half or heavy cream, 2 regular, 2 decaf.  Glass of guarana soda in the afternoon.  It's getting flat.  Almost gone, though.

Breakfast: at the Tastee Diner with my husband at 11 am, when they are at their busiest.  Usually we go at times such as Friday night at 8:30, when a straggling of customers are eating the last of the Friday night specials and there is an air of general despair.  Sunday morning at 11 is a completely different story.  The place is full of energy and the food is better (fresher, probably, and maybe they have their best cooks on too).  I just have eggs and home fries with onions, and an English muffin with butter and jam.  And decaf coffee.  Basic but perfect.

Really no lunch today.

Dinner: I cook dinner early so my daughter and I can go to the movies.  Mixed Beans with Peanuts, Ginger and Lime from Bon Appetit, homemade savory herb muffins, scrambled eggs with parmesan cheese.  The green beans are a lot of work (green beans always are a lot of work, due to the necessity of trimming all the ends, but this recipe also requires a lot of fine chopping: garlic, ginger, lemongrass, shallot, cilantro, peanuts, lime zest, kaffir lime leaves).  They end up tasting only okay.  For some reason, there is powdered coriander in them.  The herb muffins are good (recipe to come).

Snacks: 2 cups of regular coffee and 1 decaf, with half and half or heavy cream.  One of the cups of regular coffee is drunk at Panera with my husband, as we read books and wait for this movie to start.  Glass of guarana soda.  Box of Goobers at the movies with my daughter as we see this movie.  Yes, I went to the movies twice today!  By the way, don't take your 14-year-old to see Summer of Sangaile (it's an obscure Lithuanian film, so perhaps it's not that likely).  I dismissed reviews ahead of time that referred to it as "a soft-core frolic in teenage Sapphic bliss," thinking reviewers probably perceived any lesbian activity as inherently pornographic.  I was wrong.  The reviews were correct.  Not for 14-year-olds.  There was only my teenager in the audience (although there were a surprising number of Lithuanians).  My daughter was uncomfortable, and she is a 100% out lesbian.  I was uncomfortable.  She said, "Would I recommend it to someone else?.... No, I don't think so."  The Goobers were good, though.

5:00 am snack: Last piece of Domino's pizza.  I literally was so hungry that it woke me up.
